The relationships connecting a protein's sequence, structure and function have always been a popular research subject in bioinformatics or computational biology. The current research project involves the development of novel approaches toward that sequence/structure/function problem from the aspect of amino acid's physicochemical properties. The idea is that, although a protein's structure, and in a sense its function, too, is largely determined by its amino acid sequence, it is actually the physical or biochemical interactions facilitated by the amino acid sequence that are responsible for the specific function. We hypothesize, as a result, that the functional roles that a protein play in vivo may be deduced by investigating the properties associated with the amino acid sequence.
