What is sequence analysis?

Sequence analysis is an area research in bioinformatics. We work on functional analysis of nucleotide and protein sequences, using computational and/or numerical signal processing techniques.

Who are we?

The laboratory is led by the principle investigator Dr. Kuo-Bin Li (李國彬), associate professor of the Institute of Biomedical Informatics, National Yang-Ming University, (國立陽明大學生物醫學資訊研究所), Taipei, Taiwan.

What have we done?

This laboratory works on computational biology research projects. In other words, most likely you will not be seeing tubes and wet benches.

Areas of research

The relationships connecting a protein's sequence, structure and function have always been a popular research subject in bioinformatics or computational biology. The current research project involves the development of novel approaches toward that sequence/structure/function problem from the aspect of amino acid's physicochemical properties. The idea is that, although a protein's structure, and in a sense its function, too, is largely determined by its amino acid sequence, it is actually the physical or biochemical interactions facilitated by the amino acid sequence that are responsible for the specific function. We hypothesize, as a result, that the functional roles that a protein play in vivo may be deduced by investigating the properties associated with the amino acid sequence.
